General Information

Accommodation

Resident accommodation consists of single and twin-bedded rooms** and includes all meals.   Keys will be available for these rooms and, if required, may be collected at time of registration on the Sunday upon payment of a £20 (twenty pounds) cash refundable deposit.  All resident students are asked to bring their own soap and towel. For students travelling from abroad or those who have difficulty bringing their own towel, it will be possible to hire one from the school for £5 (five pounds) cash. (Please order towel(s) via the enrolment form or by email prior to the start of the School).     Students wishing to attend on a non-residential basis (with or without meals) will find many websites listing hotels, b&bs and airb&bs that are available in Sherborne.   ** Students attending as part of the SSSM Scholarship Scheme will be accommodated in dormitories.

Arrival

You are welcome to arrive at the School from 13.00hrs onwards on each Sunday (28th July / 4th August).  Lunch will be available for those who require it.  Both resident and non-resident students are asked to register their arrival at the Music School Reception and collect their Welcome Envelope.  All students (including those on the Wind Conducting Course and the George Hurst Conductors’ Course, whose first session starts at 14.30hrs on each Sunday) are asked to arrive in time to register, settle into their accommodation (we shall be pleased to accompany you and assist with luggage) and attend Introductions in the Dining Hall at 16.00hrs.   At 16.30hrs, all students will be escorted to their courses and we ask that they bring instruments, etc to Introductions.

Bar

The summer school of music’s Bar will be located in ‘The Hub’.   The License obtained by Sherborne School (‘the Licensee’), to cover ‘The Hub’ and the other areas of the School we shall use for additional social events, specifies that only alcohol purchased from the Licensee may be consumed on their premises and we ask that you be considerate of this fact.

Badge

Upon arrival, you will be given a badge to wear which will identify you by your name, course and instrument/voice, etc.  We ask that you wear this at all times so that Sherborne School’s custodians (security staff) may recognise you as being a member of the summer school of music.  In addition, if your dietary status/condition is anything other than ‘standard’, your badge will be colour-coded to reflect this, which will assist the catering staff when serving you your meals.  Please ensure that we are aware of your dietary status/condition upon enrolment and at least two weeks prior to the start of the school.

Summer School Notice Boards

Two notice boards will be on display close to the summer school office.

One will list the current day’s activities and, if  necessary, highlight any changes to the timetable or concert venues.  There will be the Piano Practice Chart, on which students may book a piano practice room in the Music School for personal use at the times specified.  Also, if there is to be a Repertoire Orchestra session that day , there will be a list of the names of the players needed.  If you find it inconvenient to take the place allocated, please inform the summer music school office by end of coffee break.

The other notice board will be for use by.our students and, in particular, will be found to be a convenient way for those wishing to organise ad hoc music making during free time.
